AltBrowse is designed with privacy as its foundation. We believe your browsing choices, link URLs, and domain preferences are personal, and we've built AltBrowse to ensure they stay private.
In simple terms: We don't collect, store, transmit, or analyze any of your link URLs, browsing patterns, personal data, settings, or usage patterns.
What We Don't Do
No Link Tracking
We don't collect, store, or transmit any URLs or links you click, even when routing them to specific browsers.
No Analytics or Tracking
We don't use any analytics services, tracking pixels, or telemetry to monitor how you use AltBrowse.
No Personal Information
We never collect names, email addresses, IP addresses, or any personally identifiable information.
No Third-Party Services
Zero third-party analytics, advertising networks, or data collection services are integrated.
What Data Stays Local
AltBrowse stores the following information locally on your Mac to provide its functionality:
Domain Rules
Your custom domain-to-browser routing rules (e.g., open github.com in Chrome, open twitter.com in Safari).
Browser Preferences
Your default browser selection, available browsers list, and browser picker preferences.
Keyboard Shortcuts
Your configured keyboard shortcuts and hotkey preferences for quick browser selection.
Interface Settings
Picker window appearance, position preferences, and other interface customizations.
Purchase Status
Whether you have the Pro version, validated securely through Apple's StoreKit framework.
Important:
All this data is stored exclusively in macOS UserDefaults on your local machine. It never leaves your device and cannot be accessed by us or any third parties.
In-App Purchases & StoreKit
AltBrowse uses Apple's StoreKit framework for Pro upgrade purchases:
Purchase Verification
How it works: Apple's StoreKit handles all payment processing and provides encrypted receipts to verify purchases.
What AltBrowse does: We only verify the receipt locally on your device to unlock Pro features.
What's NOT sent: No payment information, personal details, or purchase data is transmitted to our servers.
Family Sharing Support
AltBrowse supports Apple's Family Sharing, allowing family members to access Pro features.
Privacy protection: Family Sharing verification is handled entirely by Apple's systems, not by AltBrowse.
Apple's Responsibility:
All payment processing, receipt management, and customer data is handled by Apple according to their privacy policy. AltBrowse never sees your payment information.
How Link Routing Works
AltBrowse intercepts links at the system level to provide browser choice:
Local Processing Only
When you click a link, AltBrowse processes it locally on your Mac. The URL never leaves your device.
Domain Matching
AltBrowse checks the domain against your locally-stored rules to determine which browser to use.
No URL Logging
AltBrowse doesn't log, record, or store any URLs you open. Once the browser is selected, AltBrowse's job is done.
System-Wide Privacy
Works across all apps (Mail, Messages, Slack, etc.) without accessing or transmitting any of your data from those apps.
